Shortly after 9/11, I jumpstarted Back Room at Passerby. Adam was a key player in making that season the memorable “winter of our disco tent,” as I dubbed it. Terrorist fear, anxiety, and the brutality of winter thawed under the heat generated on the ones and twos by a cadre of downtown purists like Mr. Goldstone; our darkest thoughts were no match for the bright lights of the disco floor and the utopian beats—or Adam’s dapper, natty outfits.
We tried to duplicate our success at Sapphire, the old LES haunt, to no avail. As anyone who’s ever spent anytime in the trenches of clubland will atest, lightning seldom strikes twice. As a young disco baby I always envied my mom’s circle of polyester-clad, espadrille-stomping dancing tribe; it was my great fear that my generation could never produce anything like the disco phenonmen. Three years in Chicago and many nights in NYC’s Vinyl, Body & Soul, Shelter, APT and Passerby proved otherwise.
By coincidence, I had just started reading “Love Saves the Day” about DJ culture’s emergence circa 1970-1979. Adam’s not in the index, but when Volume 2 and 3 are published and the story of House music is told, the former Loft-baby and Garage-head will surely be included. We had some static, largely due to the slow nights at Sapphire, and we went through a distant phase during which we dropped each other from our email/Dj/spam lists. We made up, in a civil, casual way, but it wasn’t the same and upon getting the news from Andy as I was packing to move, I felt petty for holding a pointless grudge against a fellow Gemini music lover.
Visit Adams MySpace page and leave a kind word for our astral traveller as he boogies into the big VIP room in the sky. A note from his brother’s website included below as well—along with a baby picture showing Adam’s early sartorial tendencies.

Adam Goldstone, born June 3 1969 in Boston, MA and became an ancestor August 29 2006 in Black Rock, NV. He died of heart failure stemming from a congential heart defect that had been repaired when he was a baby. This page was created by Adam’s family so there would be a space for people to commemorate Adam, share memories, exchange information, and (most of all) never, ever forget the wonderful spirit that he was.
